SES Mince Pie Tasting
With the end of
November rapidly approaching the time was right to pick this year’s
mince pie for our last lecture of the year in November at Horsham. The
committee, having selected the best from Sainsbury’s, Lidl, Asda, Tesco,
Co-op, Waitrose, Marks & Spencer, Mr Kipling and Morrison’s, set about
tasting and marking the mince pies accordingly. (It should be noted that
this is a completely blind test with only chief adjudicator Lynn knowing the
true brand behind each mince pie).
As
we all tucked in to our delicately cut mince pies the general hubbub of
conversation dwindled with only sporadic comments such as “fruity”, “nice
pastry” and “oh look isn’t the star on top nice” assembled with the odd
cough and splutter as someone tasted something they wished they hadn’t!
After many tastes and much scratching of heads the scores were
collected. Lynn removed herself
from the rest of the committee as we all waited ... eager to know if our
favourite was to become this year’s mince pie of choice.
And so
... the scores were in!
To much amazement the first mince pie to fall
by the wayside was Tesco’s, closely followed by Mr Kipling and Waitrose –
all failing to score double figures! Next we lost Morrison’s, Asda and Co-op
who had made it into the teens. As the drums rolled the final three were
announced ... in 3rd place we had Lidl, leaving a straight shoot-
out between Sainsbury’s and Marks & Spencer.
Before revealing the winning
mince pie I felt it only right to share some of the studiously handwritten
comments regarding the two mince pies left:
For the Sainsbury’s mince
pie we had fruity, nice pastry, juicy and sweet.
Whilst for the Marks &
Spencer mince pie we had good fill, nice pastry, crispy and very good
flavour.
With the drums still rolling the 2nd place mince
pie was announced ... Sainsbury’s - meaning the winning mince pie for 2009
was Marks & Spencer.

Congratulation go to the Marks & Spencer mince pie, which scored a very
reasonable 27 marks out of possible 40.

The SES Amarna Study raises £1,600 for
the Amarna Trust
Following on from last years highly successful
study day with Barry Kemp the SES welcomed Barry back to our Horsham venue.
The final total of £1,600 was not only raised on the day but also from
various other fund raising events (and donations) that were held leading up
to the event itself.
Once again the SES can be proud of our
achievement; without the support of the members and visitors the day would
not have been as successful.
Thank you all!

The Opet Festival
On a summery day in August, we held our very own Opet Festival. The festival
consisted of various Ancient Egyptian related entertainment, a sumptuous
buffet, a tipple of Pimms, a play, quizzes and a raffle; the highlight of
which was our very own mummy unwrapping (alas no this wasn't a real mummy,
but formed part of the play that had the crowd in hysterics!).
During the festival the winner of the 2009 photographic competition was
announced, and a first prize of £100 (very kindly donated by Park Cameras of
Burgess Hill) was awarded to one lucky member. The winner was chosen by Dr
Toby Wilkinson at the previous lecture and had been a closely guarded
secret!
The day was considered a roaring success by all who attended
(many of whom had made the effort to come in fancy dress and looked superb).
Thanks go to all who helped, and attended, to make the day so
worthwhile.

SES raises £1,000 for Amarna Trust
At the end of a fundraising Amarna study day presented by Prof Barry Kemp to Sussex Egyptology Society (SES) in Worthing on July 21, the society donated £1,000 to the Amarna Trust. It's absolutely unprecedented for us to raise such a large amount in a single day, but thanks to enthusiastic support from our members we were able to attain that magic figure. It was a grand event in more ways than one.

Get KMT Magazine in Sussex
By special arrangement with its publishers in the USA, the SES is now stocking
current and back-issues of KMT, the world’s leading Egyptology magazine. Copies
are available to buy at lecture meetings, and if demand is sufficient we plan
to offer a pre-ordering service. The Society already sells current issues of
UK-based Ancient Egypt magazine, edited by Bob Partridge of Manchester Ancient
Egypt Society, and back-issues of Egyptian Archaeology, the Bulletin of the
Egypt Exploration Society. No serious Egyptology enthusiast or student can afford
to miss these highly informative publications.
